Writer's Journal: Reflections of a Project
June 10, 2013
Today I began my multigenre project. I will begin by brainstorming a list of project ideas.
Here are a few I have:
Secret societies
Vampires (haha)
Cooking
Traveling
Grove Park Inn
Asheville
After reflecting on these choices, I would like to choose Grove Park Inn. Grove Park Inn is a historic inn in Asheville, NC. My husband and I honeymooned there and go back each year. It is a part of our love story and it is my happy place. The one thing that is stopping me from doing this is I know SO much about it already. I want to both educate my readers but also learn something myself. It would be much easier for me to do Grove Park, but I don't want to do what is easy. I guess I need to keep thinking about it.

I have decided to do secret societies. I have always thought they were so interesting and this is a great way for me to learn about something I like, but also teach my reader something. I hope that my excitement and passion exudes through my writing.

Uh oh. I am worried I may have gotten in over my head. It is so hard to find information about this topic! I can find facts about the history of the group and old members, but I can't find any "juicy" stuff. I don't know why I am surprised, it is a SECRET society. I will keep digging.

When I started writing my informational essay, I realized my topic is too broad. I emailed Dr. Honeycutt and he said I can narrow it to Skull and Bones. I chose Skull and Bones because they are the most famous group. Also, I became interested in secret societies after seeing The Skulls, a film based on Skull and Bones. It makes sense to narrow my focus.

I spent all of today writing. Literally from 7am-7pm. My husband forced me to stop and eat dinner. I was having so much fun! I don't think I have ever said that when working on a school project. I have loved incorporating facts but using my own creativity.

I am starting to feel some struggles. I feel like sometimes I am repeating myself over and over again. Or sometimes I feel like I have nothing else to say. I guess the topic I chose was kind of hard, but I am still glad I chose it. I am just going to dig deeper for information and revamp!

I have appreciated hearing from my peers. It's not easy hearing criticism, even those that are very kind and well worded. But as I said in the post about criticism, I am always working on my craft and I am glad to hear the feedback. Both peers mentioned that I need to work on my interview. I did some more research and incorporated that into the interview. I am much happier with it now! After reading both Allen (2001) and Romano's (2000) thoughts on the multigenre paper, I can finally see what they were talking about. Reading about something and doing it is very different. Doing this project myself has definitely inspired me to use this in my classroom.

I'm finally ready to turn in my multigenre paper. What a journey! I am so glad I had the chance to get feedback from my peers. It was so helpful! This was a great experience and I can't wait to use this project in my classroom. I am very proud of my final product.
